If you use a laptop on the road and need portability, refer to the general laptop equipment link for connectors, and the link for portable workstation equipment for portable keyboards, laptop stands, and backpacks. You need to know how to carry lightweight compact equipment with you and set up your laptop quickly in a variety of different environments.

To use your laptop safely at a fixed workstation, you will need to elevate the laptop so the top of the screen is at your straight ahead vision and an external keyboard and mouse is at the correct typing height (see Prevention > Workstation > Workstation Design). You can choose to use either a docking station (if you do not want to disconnect the keyboard, mouse, ethernet and power cords every time you remove the laptop) or a laptop stand.

Please note that if you have a work surface that is the correct height for your external keyboard and mouse, the laptop can be set on anything available (e.g. a stack of books) to raise the top of the display to eye level, as long as the laptop is close enough to see when your head is aligned with your hips.

The Costco in Redwood City has very sturdy plastic height adjustable tables made by Lifetime for only $20. (4-pack available through the Costco.com, $110, almond or white).

Table-Mate II. This small compact table adjusts to 6 different heights and the table top can be set at 2 different angles. This isn't strong enough to support a monitor, but it's an inexpensive way to have a worksurface at home to support your keyboard and mouse at the correct height. It folds down when not in use.
